From Sainte Genevieve to the Vietnam Front Lines

Born into a large, faithful family in Sainte Genevieve, Missouri, Joe was the second of seven children born to Earl, a respected local carpenter, and Rita Haug. After graduating from Valley High School, Joe pursued his passion for education, earning a teaching degree from Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO).

He began his career teaching at Notre Dame High School in Cape Girardeau—a place he loved so deeply he often remarked he would have stayed forever. However, duty called when he was drafted into the Vietnam War. Joe served honorably for two years in the United States Army, including a year stationed on the front lines in artillery combat.

Upon returning home, doors closed by the war opened into new paths. After brief teaching stints at Augustinian Academy, destiny brought him to St. Dominic High School in O’Fallon, where he would go on to teach mathematics for the next 41 consecutive years.

An Unrivaled Era of Faith, Family, and Coaching Success

At St. Dominic, Mr. Haug was far more than a geometry or algebra teacher; he was the heartbeat of the school’s athletic identity. As the longtime head coach of the Cross Country and Track and Field programs, his impact was so profound that St. Dominic named its athletic track in his honor.

A Tapestry of Service, Rivalry, and Love
=========================================================================
[ The Pillar ] ---> Spent 41 years molding minds in math, driven by a
genuine love for watching his students grow.
[ The Championship ]---> Led both of his sons' cross country teams all the way
                         to the Missouri State Tournament.
[ The Holy Rival ] ---> Shared a beautiful, 52-year marriage with Jan, who
taught for 31 years at St. Dominic's archrival, Duchesne.

His coaching career reached its most meaningful peaks when he coached his own two sons, Jeff and Andy. Under his expert guidance, he led both of the cross country teams his sons ran on all the way to the Missouri State Championship tournament.

His home life was beautifully intertwined with the archdiocesan school system. In 1972, Joe married Jan Werner, the love of his life, following a prayer Jan made to her grandmother that was answered just two weeks later. Remarkably, while Joe was a permanent fixture at St. Dominic, Jan spent 31 years teaching history and government at Duchesne High School—St. Dominic’s fiercest athletic rival. While community members frequently poked fun at the ultimate “house divided,” Joe and Jan balanced the rivalry with grace, shared wisdom, and an abundance of laughter.

Tributes From an Impacted Community

Following the news of his sudden departure, an outpouring of prayers and memories from long-time friends and institutional leaders demonstrated the vastness of Joe’s footprint.

In an official statement, St. Dominic High School leadership shared:

“It is with great sadness that we share the sudden passing of our longtime teacher and Cross Country and Track Coach, Mr. Joe Haug. Having served at St. Dominic for over four decades, Mr. Haug was truly one of the pillars of our St. Dominic community. Our track proudly bears his name in his honor. Please join us in praying for Mr. Haug and his family: ‘Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul rest in peace. Amen.’

Lifelong friend Dennis Matthews reflected on Joe’s irreplaceable character:

“With gratitude for decades of friendship. The passing of Joe Haug reminds me of his faith, decency, humanity, wisdom and compassion—and jokes. Please keep Jan, Jeff and Andy and the rest of family and friends in your prayers.”

Carrying the Light Forward

Joe Haug lived a life wholly dedicated to the service of God, his country, his family, and the youth of Missouri. He often humbly reflected on his tenure by saying, “God gave me a job… Hopefully, I made a difference in their lives.”

His legacy of love and education proudly continues through his family. His son, Dr. Jeff Haug, serves the community as the Superintendent of the Mehlville School District alongside his administrator wife, Robin, and their children, Ben and Meghan. His son, Andy Haug, continues the family’s dedication to youth development working within the Wright City School District.

The broader Missouri community extends its deepest condolences to his beloved wife, Jan, his brothers Greg and Paul, his sisters, his sons, and the endless roster of runners who sprinted across his track. May his soul rest in eternal, beautiful peace.
